Sanyo HD700: The Perfect Travel Camcorder?

Tagged:  •    •    •

Every good digital traveler needs a camcorder. With so many great choices, digital nomads can now get picky about camcorders and choose one suitable for travel.

For a digital nomad, the most important factors for choosing an appropriate camcorder are probably size, portability, quality and price.

Sanyo's Xacti HD 700 camcorder is among the ones that fit the bill well. In the less than $500 range, this camcorder is pocket-sized, uses SDHC memory cards, has small, cheap batteries, and records good quality video.

sanyo hd700 review By relying on tiny SD memory cards instead of a hard drive like other camcorders, Sanyo was able to keep the Sanyo HD 700 small. And the SD or SDHC memory cards eliminates the need to carry DVC tapes or blank miniDVD discs like some other camcorders on the market today.

The video is far from studio quality, but even at the default settings, I have been impressed with the output. As I saw mentioned in a lot of reviews (such as on the popular Steve's Digicams website) before I bought the camcorder, the low-light recording is grainy at best with the HD700. Still, as a digital nomad, I'm not worried. Most travel usage is outdoors and in well-lighted indoor conditions.

Here's a quick test I shot of some ducks. Though downsized for playing on the web, it shows the potential of using a Sanyo HD700.

I can't wait to do some real traveling.
